An Army Bomb Disposal Team has this evening made safe a Mills 36 hand grenade found under Thomond Bridge in Limerick.

The grenade was discovered by staff as they carried out maintenance work on the bridge.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived on scene at 3.30pm, following a request from An Garda Síochána, and carried out an initial assessment of the area.

A cordon was put in place for the duration of the operation to ensure public safety.

Due to the location of the grenade, the assistance of the Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service was required.

The grenade was subsequently moved to a safe location and disposed of and at around 8pm, the scene was declared safe.

In a statement, the Defence Forces say historic munitions from conflicts in the early 20th century can be encountered from time to time.

They’re advising members of the public who find such munitions to maintain a safe distance and inform An Garda Síochána, who in turn will request Defence Forces assistance.
