Kilkee Chamber Reacts With Concern To ESRI Report On Brexit

The President of Kilkee Chamber has labelled Brexit “a mess”, as an ESRI report warns that 80,000 Irish jobs could be lost in the next decade.

The economic think-tank is warning of the worst case scenario, should Britain crash out of the European Union without a deal, which would see our economy take a major hit.

But hope remains here that the deal can still be struck.

In the event of a no-deal Brexit, the ESRI predicts Ireland’s economy would take a 4.8% hit over a ten year period.

It’s warning of 80,000 jobs being lost, prices in shops skyrocketing and lower wages for those at work in this country.

Should a deal be struck, the report predicts a still worrying, but much lesser, economic hit in Ireland of 2.6%.

President of Kilkee Chamber of Commerce Cillian Murphy, who is a Fianna Fáil local election candidate, says it’s concerning for those of us living in rural Ireland.

The report has also been causing concern in government circles.

Minister for European Affairs Helen McEntee says the figures are worrying.

These business owners in Ennis have mixed views on the report and say little can be predicted until we know for sure what path the UK will take.
