It’s claimed towns in Clare will continue to have air quality as poor as Beijing and Bombay if we don’t stop burning smokey coal.
Surveys carried out by the EPA have highlighted towns including Shannon and Ennistymon as having worrying air quality and pollution, due to the use of fossil fuels.

As things stand, smokey coal is banned in the country’s cities and some major towns but not elsewhere.
Professor Pat Goodman from the Technological University of Dublin says it might shock people to discover that rural Ireland’s air is in fact worse than city centres:
