A Shannon mother, whose 10 year old son faced nearly three weeks of delays in accessing chemotherapy, has expressed her fear over the impact it could have on her son’s health.

Agnes O’Shaughnessy’s son Alex, who is suffering from a rare form of cancer, is among a number of children caught up in the nightmare of having chemotherapy cancelled at Crumlin Hospital.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has admitted that it’s “terrible” and “wrong” but added that “it’s not a good idea” to have children in a hospital, when it’s “chock full of children with infections”.

In Alex’s case, the delays amounted to a 20 days in total and his mother Agnes has told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that she’s worried about what that will mean for her son in the long term.
