SIPTU has given a 2.6 million euro funding boost for Shannon Heritage sites a cautious welcome.

The funding will allow it to keep Bunratty and King John’s Castles open until the end of the year, but falls short of the 6.4 million euro parent company Shannon Group claimed was needed to keep the sites open until June 2021.

Shannon Group has welcomed the move, saying it will not only benefit employees at the sites, but also the wider Midwest Tourism industry.

SIPTU’s Martin O’Rourke says the funding announcement provides a window of opportunity, but that the focus now needs to turn to finding a new home for these sites into the future.
