Clare County Council is being called upon to include cost-rental units in any future social housing developments.
Cost rental homes are provided by local authorities and approved housing bodies and allow those earning up to €59,000 per year to secure a tenancy for a minimum of 25% less than the market average rent.
At this month’s county council meeting however, Senior Executive Development Officer Pádraig MacCormaic cited construction costs and long term maintenance bills as a barrier to providing such accommodation.
Lahinch Green Party Councillor Liam Grant believes that the scheme could be introduced here on a gradual basis.
