A Clare government TD is calling for Knockalisheen direct provision centre to be connected to its surrounding community before it is wound down in three years’ time.

The State plans to end the system by 2024, with a new international protection support service to be established by the Department of Children.

The centre, based in Meelick, can accommodate up to 250 asylum seekers at any one time.

Fianna Fail TD Cathal Crowe who’s himself based in the village, has told the Dail that he’s concerned that Knockalisheen residents are being cut off from the rest of the community.
