Clare had the second highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in the country over Christmas.

New figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre show Westmeath’s incidence rate was more than double the national average, with 3,056 cases per 100,000 people in the last week of 2021, compared to the national figure of 1,366.

Clare followed with 1,974 cases, while Kilkenny had 1,855 and Longford 1,820.

The lowest incidence rate was in Kerry at 885 cases per 100,000 of the population, followed by Wexford, Waterford and Cavan.

The report also shows the median age of those with Omicron was 29 years of age.
