The Clare branch president of St Vincent De Paul says any measures that can help people manage the “perfect storm” of energy costs and inflation is welcome.

The cabinet has signed off on on a number of measures aimed at reducing fuel bills, including a cut to the VAT charged on electricity and gas down to nine per cent, which will remain in place from May 1st until the end of October.

An additional 100 euro fuel allowance payment will also be made, the PSO levy will be scrapped by October, while a programme aimed at informing businesses and consumers of ways to reduce energy costs will also be launched.

The Government hopes the measures will offset the impact of the carbon tax, but Clare SVP branch President, Denis Carty has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that he’s concerned the measures won’t go far enough.
