The chronic levels of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital have been described as a terrible indictment of our health system, given the tens of millions of euro invested in the facility.

The latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show there were 113 patients waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick this morning, 66 of those in the Emergency Department.

The overall number has climbed by 8 since yesterday and is the second highest figure recorded by any hospital in the country since records began.

Speaking to Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill, Clare Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway, who’s a member of the Oireachtas Health Committee, has reiterated his call for an independent review of the management of the facility to be carried out.
