A Clare-native ex-director of Trócaire is appealing for mental health supports to be made available for humanitarian aid workers as the war in Ukraine rages on.

It follows calls from the children’s charity Barnardos, urging the government to develop a trauma-informed response to the short, medium and long-term needs of children and families who’ve fled Ukraine.

However, Kilmaley native Éamonn Meehan firmly believes that there are two-sides to the coin and that those who are supporting refugees in their hour of need will also suffer mental turmoil themselves.

Éamonn says he was greatly affected by his time helping in Rwanda following the genocide in 1994.
