A Clare native infectious diseases expert believes the government’s decision to phase out Covid-19 testing this autumn is a mistake.

The Cabinet has agreed to stand down Covid-19 PCR testing centres and introduce a robust surveillance system in its place.

Testing will now only be administered in a clinical setting if a GP deems it necessary to treat a patient or if public health officials require it to manage an outbreak.

Sixmilebridge native and former head of the School of Life Sciences at The University of Nottingham, Professor James McInerney, says widespread testing should be available given the number of repeat infections that are occurring.
