A member of the Clare Leader Forum is calling for greater supervision to prevent the abuse of disabled parking spaces in Ennis.

It comes as a former Mayor of Ennis has raised the shortage of blue badge spaces in the county town.

At this month’s meeting of the Ennis Municipal District, Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy, put forward a motion calling for the number of disabled parking spaces within the town to be increased.

The Clarecastle representative told the meeting that a number of constituents had expressed concern about the shortage in designated space for disabled drivers – including former TD James Breen.

Of the 1,580 parking spaces in Ennis, there are currently 80 spaces for drivers with blue badges.

However, since the motion was raised, four additional spaces have since been secured, which Councillor Paul Murphy says is something which should be celebrated.

A member of the Clare Leader Forum is calling for greater action to address the misuse of disabled parking spaces in the town.

In 2021, 92 fines were handed out to people in Clare for parking in disabled places without a permit. 60 of those in Ennis.

Disability activist Dermot Hayes says people need to stop justifying inappropriate use of designated accessible parking.
