Lidl has been granted planning permission to build a second store in Ennis.

The German supermarket giant has been given the green light for a store and mixed-use development at the junction of the Clare Road and Toberteascain Road.

The development will include a Lidl store, 20 residential apartments, a café, playground and 2 commercial units and promises to transform the existing vacant site into a vibrant retail and residential area.

The 20 million euro development will see the creation of 30 permanent jobs and 100 jobs during the construction phase.

The store will open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 9pm on Sundays and will incorporate a range of sustainability features including electric vehicle charger spaces and a solar panel system.

This was Lidl’s second application to build at the site, having previously been given permission by Clare County Council, only to be denied approval by An Bord Pleanála.

The planning body cited concerns that the development would act as a counter attraction to Ennis, and seriously impact on the vibrancy and vitality of the town centre.

This second application to Clare County Council, received a number of objections, including from the Retail Grocery Dairy & Allied Trades Association.

If those who made submissions to Clare County Council decide to appeal the decision to An Bord Pleanála, they have one month to do so.
