Number Of Inpatient And Daycase Discharges From Ennis Hospital Rises By Nearly 11% In 2021

The number of in-patients and day case presentations who were discharged from Ennis hospital climbed by nearly 11% in 2021 compared to the year prior.

The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show that more than 36,000 such patients were seen at the model two hospital during the second year of the pandemic.

 

A total of 36,043 patients were discharged from Ennis Hospital in 2021 – an increase of nearly 11% of the 32,501 who passed through the doors of the hospital in 2020.

Both year saw substantial cancellations to elective surgery due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

But, when compared to 2019, 2021’s figures were only 5% lower.

The average length of stay for inpatients in Clare in 2021 was 4.4 days – that average increasing to almost 7 days for those aged 85 and over and reducing to nearly 4 days for children up to 14 years of age.

In Limerick, hospitals recorded a total of 64,743 inpatients and daycases, a 6.5% decrease on the numbers treated in 2019.

It’s important to note that Limerick’s figures include University Hospital Limerick as well as St. John’s Hospital, Croom Orthopaedic Hospital and University Maternity Hosptial Limerick.

In neighbouring Limerick, the average stay in 2021 was 4.63 days – increasing to 8.48 days for those aged over 85 and reducing to just under 4 days for minors aged up to 14.
