The Clare-based General Secretary of the ICSA believes new measures aimed at reducing the cost of solar panels isn’t ambitious enough for a large portion of farmers in Clare to buy into it.

The Environment Minister is seeking cabinet approval this week for the VAT on solar panel installation to be scrapped for both private and public buildings, resulting in a 1,000 euro reduction in the cost.

This, coupled with a SEAI grant, could bring the cost of an average project to about 5,400 euro.

The changes will be introduced in the Spring Finance Bill, but Cratloe farmer Eddie Punch says while we should have huge ambition for the sector, more work is needed.
