A former Mayor of Clare is confident the local authority will accept a government funding package aiming to facilitate the takeover of the county’s assets of the Shannon Heritage sites.

Elected members of the Local Authority are meeting today to vote on whether to accept an initial €6 million funding package from government this year, with a commitment of further allocations from the OPW in the coming two years.

It would see Clare County Council take control of the management of Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, Knappogue Castle, Craggunowen and the Cliffs of Moher Gift Shop from Shannon Airport Group from May 1st.

Sixmilebridge Independent Councillor PJ Ryan believes accepting the proposal will allow the sites to retain pride of place as intended for the tourist season.
