The lack of information on goods and services for older people is being highlighted as an issue in County Clare.

The Clare Older People’s Council is holding an event in Treacy’s West County Hotel on Friday to raise awareness of the supports and services available to the county’s senior population.

The most recent census figures reveal the over 65 population in Clare has increased by 23% since 2016 and now stands at 21,657.

According to groups like the Clare Older People’s Council, this compounds the need for adequate provision of supports and services for older people in the county.

Clare’s Health and Wellbeing Age Expo takes place this Friday with the aim of shining a light on amenities and outlets of interest and use to older people that often go under the radar.

Services that are of practical use as well as those which are of recreational interest to older people will be on display at the event, with representatives present from the Mid-West Community Healthcare Integrated Care Programme For Older Persons, Sláinte an Chláir, Alone and Local Link as well as Clare Libraries and Active Ennis.

PRO of Clare Older People’s Council Madge O’Callaghan says it is vital that people in their senior years have access to information that is pertinent to them.

The event is partially funded by Clare County Council through its Healthy Clare programme.

Healthy Clare coordinator Dena McGrath believes the event will equip older people with the tools they need to look after their health and wellbeing.
