An elderly man has escaped serious injury following a house fire in Ennis, due to the swift actions of neighbours.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at Linnane’s Terrace on the Kilrush Road last night.

The alarm was raised shortly after seven o’clock last night, after neighbours of an elderly resident saw smoke coming from the bedroom of the house in Linnane’s Terrace.

After alerting the emergency services, the neighbours started banging on the doors and windows, trying to alert the elderly man, believed to be inside.

On arrival, Gardaí and Clare County Fire Service personnel gained access to the house and the elderly male was found to be semi-unconscious.

He was taken from the house by fire crews, who immediately gave medical assistance and he was subsequently transferred by Ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

Gardaí have thanked neighbours who assisted in preventing a potentially fatal outcome through their swift action.
