A Clare Oireachtas Health Committee member is calling for an increase in the upcoming health budget to reflect the growing population of the MidWest region.

It follows the publication of the Government’s mid-year expenditure report, which shows healthcare spending was 2.9% above its intended limit at the end of June.

The Department of Health has accredited the overrun to unexpected high costs in the acute hospitals sector, despite receiving a record allocation of €23.1 billion last year.

Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway says the state needs to provide even more funding in 2024 to ensure the timely enhancement of services at Ennis General and University Hospital Limerick.
