An East Clare councillor insists that “health and safety trumps biodiversity” when it comes to hedge maintenance on rural roads.

This month’s meeting of the Killaloe Municipal District has heard that overgrowth on roads in the east of the county is an area of concern, with reports of untrimmed hedges and verges making some roads virtually impassable.

Maghera Councillor Pat Hayes has called on the local authority to begin its verge trimming programme “as a matter of urgency” and claimed the overgrowth on certain routes creates a “real health and safety risk to both pedestrians and road users”.

The Fianna Fáil Councillor says while protecting biodiversity is a priority, safety on the roads must come first.
