The Clare Chair of the Irish Farmers Association is calling for a secondary market for foods that don’t meet supermarkets current standards.

It comes as the IFA has said the exacting criteria of supermarkets on fruit and vegetables are costing farmers a fortune.

The organisation has found that around one fifth of vegetables in Ireland are judged not fit for sale and the figure is 16% for fruit, many of which are due to the crop being misshapen.

Parteen Farmer, Tom Lane, says even if the crop doesn’t fit supermarket beauty standards, it should not be wasted.
