A Clare woman is encouraging people to break the code of silence around sexual, physical and emotional abuse.

It comes ahead of World Mental Health Day, which takes place on October 10th and is this year adopting the theme of “mental health is a universal human right”.

Speaking to Clare FM’s Morning Focus, the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, has shared her experience of being greeted with shame and victim blaming when she spoke to friends and relatives about having encountered sexual assault, harassment and manipulation.

She insists societal attitudes must change around abuse, so that victims can feel more comfortable coming forward.
