Residents of this county are being encouraged to brave the winter elements in a bid to stave off respiratory issues.

The advice comes as 3,000 people are hospitalised with COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ever year across Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary.

The condition accounts for up to 45% of patients attending respiratory clinics and usually affects people over the age of 40 who smoke or have smoked for an extended period.

Clinical Nurse Specialist at University Hospital Limerick Noelle Ryan says in addition to refraining from smoking and using inhalers, a special programme of exercise can be an effective way of fighting the disease.
