A Midwest migrants’ rights charity has labelled the EU’s new migration laws as “a step in the wrong direction” for refugees.

The European Union’s reform of its asylum laws will result is faster vetting of irregular arrivals, the establishment of border detention centres, expedited deportation of rejected asylum seekers.

Also included is a ‘solidarity mechanism’ which allows particularly burdened countries to ease the flow of migrants across their borders.

While Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has hailed the overhaul as “good progress”, Oxfam has described the legislation as “a dangerous dismantling of the key principles of human rights and refugee law”.

Doras CEO John Lannon says the new measures could be detrimental to the safety and survival of thousands seeking shelter.
