Clare County Council is urging the government to fast-track previous requests for speed limit reductions in this county.

In the first quarter of 2024,the Department of Transport is expected to reduce default speed limits on national roads from 100km/h to 80km/h, local and rural roads from 80km/h to 60km/h, while built-up areas would be limited to 30KM/H.

It follows the worst year for Irish road deaths in over a decade in 2023, where 184 people lost their lives, including six in Clare.

The local authority meanwhile is still awaiting the results of speed limit assessments from the TII near New Quay, Rinneen and Caherea National Schools on the N67 and N68.

Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard says that no family deserves to be without a loved due to a road death.
