Gardaí are urging Clare households to document gifts or property received over Christmas or purchased during the January sales.

Phones, laptops, gardening equipment and similar items are often the target of thieves responsible for home thefts early in the new year.

Owners are advised to record a description of valuable items, the make and model, serial number, the cost and date of purchase.

Garda Eimear McDonagh from the Crime Prevention Office at Ennis Garda Station said “to assist Gardaí in returning property to the owner, we would ask that they document their property.

“This can be done on the Garda Siochána App or it can be written onto the Property Register Booklet.

“An Garda Síochána property app is available to download on your phone. Once you have the app downloaded and created your account you can add property.

“The app also allows you to photograph the property. In the event that any of your property is stolen you can select the object and press the report button in the App.

“The second option is the Property Register Booklet. This can be downloaded from the Garda Siochána website or it can be requested by emailing [email protected]

“Owners are asked to record a description of the item, the make and model, serial number, the cost and date of purchase and value,” Garda McDonagh concluded.
