Midwest Simon is urging the Government to fast-track the delivery of social housing in Clare, in an effort to curb the rising number of people entering homelessness.

It follows the publication of the the Simon Communities’ latest Locked Out Of The Market report, which found that the private rental market is not a sustainable option for the vast majority of people experiencing homelessness.

Just 33 places were available within the discretionary rate of the Housing Assistance Payment Scheme, while in 9 of the 16 areas surveyed, there was no accommodation available to rent through HAP.

Midwest Simon’s Regional Manager for Emergency Accommodation says they’re working closely with the local authority to provide accommodation for rising numbers entering homelessness in this county.

But Jonathan Shinnors says there’s an incredible shortage of housing units to meet anyone’s needs in the Clare region and while he believes Government plans for social housing delivery are working, they need to be expedited.
