The man, who cannot be named by court order is charged with sexually exploiting the teen at a named location on a date between the 3rd of January 2015 and the 10th of February last.

During a lengthy bail application the man broke down and informed the court his family was not aware he had been arrested.

Garda Fiona O'Connell outlined that within a week of befriending the boy on social media, the man allegedly sent the teen provocative images and videos.

She added that gardaí found 56 images "of the boy at the centre of this investigation", on a phone belonging to the accused.

Three phones in total owned by the 29-year-old and one owned by the boy, are currently with garda technical experts.

The court heard the 29-year-old was intercepted as he was heading to meet the boy in a hotel on Monday.

It was the second time a hotel room had been booked but neither meeting took place.

As part of his bail conditions, described as some of the strictest ever imposed by a judge at Limerick District Court, the man promised he would not contact the injured party and would stay away from social media applications or use an internet enabled mobile phone.

Judge Marian O'Leary granted bail provided half of a 5,000 independent surety is lodged in the court.

He's been remanded in custody with consent to bail until Tuesday.
