A Clare TD is calling on Aer Lingus to prove its exhausted all avenues to retain it’s Cargo base at Shannon Airport.

The future of 18 employees hangs in the balance following the Airline’s decision to close the facility on Wednesday after 55 years, citing unjustifiable costs.

The Aer Lingus cargo hub had been part of the furniture at Shannon Airport since 1969, however following a review , the airline’s parent group IAG has taken the decision to cease operations there by the end of this year.

According to IAG, “Every effort was made in the last few years to secure additional cargo business for Shannon both locally and by diverting cargo from other areas and this activity did not support the level of investment required for the building.”

In a statement to Clare FM, the group goes on to say ” it could no longer support a dedicated presence as 95% of all Shannon cargo travels by road to fly in or out of Dublin”

A Clare Government TD though is not convinced the airline has exhausted all options to keep the service operational.

Meelick Deputy Cathal Crowe is calling for the Shannon Airport Group and Aer Lingus to determine if a solution can be reached surrounding the building’s maintenance cost with a view to retaining the facility.

The Fianna Fáil Aviation Spokesperson fears manufacturers in the MidWest who rely on the supply chain and the local economy will suffer without a resolution.

SIPTU will be meeting with Aer Lingus from next Thursday to discuss firstly what it would take to retain the businesses and failing that, suitable redeployment and remuneration packages for its 18 personnel.

According to Shannon Airport, it’s overall freight traffic has increased by 23% in the last five years alone.

SIPTU Aviation Sector Organiser Niall Phillips says Aer Lingus must satisfy why the closure is necessary and must prevent the local workforce and their families from being discommoded.
