A Clare teachers’ representative claims students with special needs are bearing the brunt of the teacher recruitment crisis.

A new poll has found that 82% of schools had no applications for vacant posts in the 2023 to 2024 school year while 87% of schools said there were no substitute teachers available to provide cover.

In Clare this week, there are 11 advertised second-level teaching roles and four primary teaching positions yet to be filled ahead of the return of the school year.

Former President of the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland and Kilkee Community College teacher Geraldine O’Brien says special needs assistants are being drafted into class teaching roles due to the shortage of full-time staff.
