Two Clare members of the Defence Forces will be honoured with Mayoral Awards tomorrow.

Major General Adrian Ó’Murchú began his service in the army reserve of the 22nd Infantry Battalion before enlisting as a Cadet in the permanent defence forces in 1982.

General Ó’Murchú would go on to serve in the Elite Army Ranger Wing and participated in multiple overseas tours of duty with the UN, including in South Lebanon, Somalia, Western Sahara, Israel, Syria and Ivory Coast.

The Ennis man says hes been lucky to serve with world-class comrades throughout his career.

The event will begin at 11:30 on Sunday morning with a mass to commemorate deceased members of the defence forces, before a parade and wreath laying at Peace Park at 1pm.

The presentation of the Mayoral Awards by Mayor of Ennis Cllr Clare Colleran-Molloy will then take place at the Templegate Hotel at 2pm, where the Ennis based Head Chaplain of the Irish Defence Forces will also be honoured.

Fr Pascal Hanrahan’s deployments included two tours of Iraq and Afghanistan with the British Army, while he has recently returned from a peacekeeping mission with the Irish Defence Forces in Lebanon.

He says the chaplain’s role is vital to assist soldiers with the trauma they witness in the course of duty.
