Clare’s New Chief Superintendent Defends Roads Policing Strategy

Clare’s new Chief Superintendent says he makes no apologies for the way in which the force polices the rules regarding drink driving.

There’s been intense scrutiny of the Gardaí nationally, in the wake of controversial stiffer penalties for those caught over the limit, who now face an automatic driving ban.

In the first three months of the year, the number of drivers caught over the limit in Clare more than doubled from 21 to 47, though Gardaí attributed this to new equipment that allows them carry out roadside drug driving tests.

In a wide-ranging interview to be broadcast on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Chief Superintendent Michael Gubbins insisted that the force here will continue to enforce the law
