Body Of A Man In His 80s Recovered From River Fergus

The body of a man has been recovered from the River Fergus in Ennis today.

The discovery was made at around 1.00pm by divers who had been involved in a search of the river since early last week. Search teams had also been looking for a second man feared to have entered the river last weekend.

The body located this afternoon is believed to be that of a man in his 80s seen by passers-by in the river on Tuesday evening. A major multi-agency search and rescue operation was mounted after emergency services were alerted to the sighting.

The body was located by volunteer search and recovery divers and taken from the river by Clare Civil Defence personnel. The body was later removed by hearse to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances following the discovery of a body of a man in his 80s, in the River Fergus, Ennis, at approximately 1pm today. His body has been removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem will take place at a later date, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation.”
