Clare Soccer Coach Fears FAI Allegations Are “Start Of Tidal Wave”

A Clare soccer coach fears allegations about the treatment of top female players in the nineties are the start of a tidal wave of similar accounts.

The Football Association of Ireland has this week apologised to female players and trainees on a 1990s FAS course, who claim they experienced unwanted or inappropriate sexual advances from a number of senior coaches.

The FAI says it’s already taken several actions, including providing support to the women affected, reporting to statutory bodies and putting in place precautionary measures to protect current players.

Ennis native FAI Accredited Coach, Irene Hehir, who played alongside some of the women affected, hopes the bravery displayed by them will inspire others to come forward and she insists stringent processes should be in place to ensure player welfare is prioritised.
