Former Mayor Hits Out Over Lack Of Enforcement Relating To Intoxicated Driving

A Former Mayor of Clare has hit out over a failure to enforce driving restrictions on those who’ve been arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Councillor Tony O’Brien comments follow the publication of the Medical Bureau of Road Safety’s annual report, which states that 265 drivers were arrested for intoxicated driving more than once, with one driver arrested seven times last year.

The report also found alcohol and drugs continue to play a major contributory factor in road traffic collisions.

Killaloe Fianna Fáil Councillor O’Brien, who’s previously voiced concern over a lack of a visible garda presence in this county, believes one arrest in a lifetime is one arrest too many.

Better Ennis insists, meanwhile, that fines and penalties associated with intoxicated driving are too lenient here.

Spokesperson Síle Guinane believes the state should look towards other countries with more stringent laws in order to deter those getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs from doing so.
