So far this year, Clare County Council’s waste enforcement team has dealt with a total of 631 complaints.

Of these, 511 relate to illegal dumping, 21 for waste presentation, 35 involve dog fouling and 64 are for littering.

There has been a notable spike in reported incidents during the summer months however, with new figures from the local authority showing that between June and August, the number of complaints lodged jumped by 36%.

As a result, the waste enforcement team carried out inspection of 3 permitted and 4 unauthorised sites during July and August.

The inspections were carried out to monitor compliance with the permit conditions of the authorised sites, while in respect of the unauthorised sites, Clare County Council has confirmed that follow-up enforcement is ongoing.

The prevalence of illegal dumping has also emerged at civic amenities throughout the county, which has led to the local authority implementing anti-dumping initiatives at Active Ennis Tim Smythe Park and Active Ennis John O’Sullivan Park at Lee’s Road.

Despite this, in the month of July alone, Clare County Council collected over 4 tonnes worth of mattresses from civic amenity sites, 128 tonnes of timber and over 57 tonnes of what’s described as “bulky items”.
