World’s First Emergency Aircraft Locating Service To Be Launched In Clare

The world’s first ever global emergency aircraft-locating service will be launched in Clare this morning.

The Irish Aviation Authority will operate it from its North Atlantic Communications Centre in Ballygirreen.

Up until now, air-traffic controllers could only track 30 percent of the earth’s surface, as they used ground-based radars.

But with the Aireon technology, air-traffic controllers will now use space satellite receivers to track all flights, anywhere in the world.

Chief executive of the Irish Aviation Authority, Peter Kearney, says this will allow them to find the exact location of an aircraft in seconds:
