Ennis town centre is traffic free today ..
Abbey Street,O Connell Square and O Connell Street are closed to cars and trucks as part of the pedestrianisation initiative in an effort to revive flagging trade in Clare’s County Town.
Local traders say the move is necessary given the shopping slump of recent months and the loss of a number of companies from Ennis because of the economic downturn.
The scheme will be in place every Saturday from 12 until 6pm for the next six months.
All traffic from Lower Abbey Street must turn onto Abbey Street Car Park, High Street traffic onto Bank Place and Francis Street traffic must now turn right into Lower Abbey Street.
