Members of Clare County Council are holding a specially convened meeting this week to discuss what they’ve called the proposed butchery of the county’s boundary.

Local representatives have hit out at the Local Government Report which is recommending the move as part of efforts to revitalise Limerick City so it can be a driving force in the Mid West.

If accepted by cabinet the proposals would see Shannon Banks and Westbury move into Limerick City while the Clare Campus of UL would also come under he governance of the single authority for the city and county.

The committee behind the recommendation has warned that every part of the Midwest region would suffer if "Limerick is not fixed but Clare Mayor Christy Curtin has dismissed this

The Head of Shannon Development insists that the inclusion of parts of South East Clare in Limerick will actually boost their employment prospects.

The Mid West Development Agency says the amalgamation of the two local authorities in Limerick along with the boundary changes are necessary if Limerick City is to develop as a driving force for the region.

CEO Vincent Cunnane doesn’t believe the Shannon should determine what the city limits are and failure to recognize this could have far reaching consequences for the entire region
