Ceremonies to mark the 90th anniversary of one of the most remarkable episodes in the War of Independence took place near Miltown Malbay today.

The Rineen Ambush was carried out by the Mid Clare branch of Irish Republican Army in September 1920, at Dromin Hill when local volunteers ambushed a Royal Irish Constabulary  lorry, killing six officers.

The Mid Clare troops fled the scene with few injuries and succeeded in gaining new arms and ammunition for local volunteers in a revenge attack for the killing of Ennistymon officer Martin Devitt.
