Its emerged that the cow at the centre of Tuesday’s rampage in Ennis was reportedly pregnant but has since lost her calf.

The animal was placed in a field with other cattle after the incident when she escaped from the Marts on the Quin Road and raced up Clon road, slightly injuring a number of people including a garda who attempted to coral her away from the town centre.

There were initial calls for the cow to be put down given her agitated state but veterinary officials with the department of agriculture kept her under watch but she since lost a calf she was carrying.

Its understood she wasn’t used to being handled by anyone other than her owner and was spooked by the activity at the marts which some believe lead her to lose her unborn calf.
