Ennis General is set to one of just 15 hospitals nationwide to be chosen for a new HSE colonoscopy screening programme.
Clare’s County Hospital is the only one selected in the mid west and the unit will be available to men and women aged 60-69 next year 2012.
They will be offered free home testing kits – and anyone who gets a result that needs further examination will be referred to one of the 15 units nationwide including Ennis.
In Ireland, colorectal cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second most common fatal cancer among both men and women.
