The official launch of Fianna Faíl’s election campaign got off to a rocky start in Ennis yesterday.

Veteran Fianna Fail representative and former government Minister Brendan Daly accompanied new candidate Dr John Hillery to nominate him for the General Election, but didn’t go ahead with the move following complaints by fellow candidate and outgoing TD Timmy Dooley.

It’s understood the Mountshannon candidate took issue with the former President’s son being backed by one of Fianna Faíl’s  most high profile former TDs and, in the end, both candidates were nominated by party organisers.

The incident is seen as a clear sign of tension within the party which could struggle to hold on to two Dáil seats in Clare.
