The Economic and Social Research Institute says over indebtedness has increased significantly since the onset of the recession.
A new report published by the ESRI shows that in 2008 – an average of one in every twenty households in Ireland was over indebted.
The study also found that the majority of households experiencing indebtedness – did not have a mortgage or were not credit card holders.
