Fears for Clare farmers if South America market opened up

It’s feared the potential opening of European markets to South American beef could lead to further hardship for Clare farmers.

Members of the IFA’s National Livestock Committee this week staged a sit-in protest at the offices of the European Commission, saying Irish farmers would pay a heavy price if such an agreement was to be put in place.

Figures released by the CSO recently put the average farm income at just 16,000 euro – Chairman of Clare IFA Michael Lynch says farmers in the county will see a further fall in this should the deal go ahead.
