A Shannon man has been handed a three-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to subjecting a 10 month old baby to cruel and shocking injuries.

20-year-old Larry Connors of Cronan Lawn, Shannon, pleaded guilty to the offences against the child of his former partner which occured over a three-week period from December 2010.

Mr. Connors , who was living with the child’s mother at the time, admitted causing the injuries to the child over a three-week period in December 2010 and January of last year.

Consultant paediatrician at Limerick regional Hospital, Dr. Siobhan Gallagher, described the injuries as ‘severe and significant’ and said the child would have been in extreme pain at the time they occured.

At Ennis Circuit Court yesterday, Judge Carrol Moran described the case as ‘fairly shocking’ and handed down a three-year jail term to Mr. Connors, who is now 20 years old.

The child’s mother told the court that her baby is now ‘doing fine’, but requires further surgery and speech therapy as a result.
