The government is being asked to review upwards the amount of supports it pays to young Clare couples who are looking to rent a home, particularly in urban areas.

In Clare at present, a couple with 2 children receive a maximum of 475 euro per month in rent supplement, but the Seanad has heard that this is wholly inadequate for people seeking homes in Ennis or Shannon.

The same group of people in parts of Dublin can be paid 925 euro each month.

Fine Gael Senator and Shannon representative Tony Mulcahy is calling on Social Protection Minister Joan Burton to take action.
