A Clare government Senator says that he ‘regrets’ the coalition’s decision to abolish town councils.

However, North Clare Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway says the time had come for an overhaul of local government, in order to make financial savings.

Minister Phil Hogan yesterday unveiled his long-awaited plans for local government reform, which he says will save 420 million euro.  However, his plans do include the abolition of Ennis, Shannon, Kilrush and Kilkee Town Councils, as well as a reduction in the number of county councillors here.

While the plans have been criticised by some of Clare’s local representatives, Senator Martin Conway says the government is delivering what it had promised before last year’s general election

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Clare has described as ‘sad’ the government’s decision to abolish Clare’s town Councils.

Fianna Fail Councillor Pat Daly feels the wrong decision has been made.
