The Medical Council has cleared a consultant surgeon of allegations of professional misconduct and poor professional performance arising out of the death of an Ennis woman in December 2008.

Mrs. Sherlock died on 10 December 2008 after three operations under Dr. Syed Navi in the preceding three week period.

The mother of 13 first attended at Ennis General in June of that year – when she was 17 weeks pregnant complaining of abdominal pain.

Doctors believed she had an inflamed gallbladder, but it was not until mid-November that appendicitis was diagnosed, after a CT scan was done at Limerick Regional.

The fitness to practice inquiry has concluded this evening, following four days of hearings, and cleared Dr. Naqvi of any wrongdoing.
